Opposed engines trade packaging for balance character
Opposed engine layouts change the balance problem.
They can reduce some reciprocating imbalance by moving pistons in opposing directions, but they introduce packaging, width, exhaust routing, maintenance, and structural tradeoffs. Balance is never free.
The question is which compromises fit the vehicle.
