Plant automation matters most when nobody is home.

That means the system should handle failure modes: dry reservoirs, stuck pumps, sensor drift, power loss, network loss, leaks, overwatering, and unusual heat. A schedule alone is not enough.

Unattended automation should be boringly fault-tolerant.
